Vegan Leather: The Guilt-Free Choice




In the previous blog we have talked about the 3 materials used as the covering for Benithem chairs, which are some of the most common types in the market. In this blog however, we will talk about one more category of material which is the most unique one amongst all, Vegan Leather.

The name Vegan Leather makes people do a double take, because normally these 2 words will not be placed together due to their different nature. The word 'Vegan' is taken from the term Veganism, which is the practice of abstaining from the usage of animal products, such as in diet or in everyday goods. 'Leather' however is often used to refer to the material made from the skin of an animal. As these 2 words contrast heavily, people will not used them together. The idea of leather that is vegan also brings mockery, as there is no way something like this could be produced.

But in reality, it is completely possible.

Vegan Leather is a material made out of either 100% organic or artificial materials to mimic the feeling and texture of real leather. Benithem Vegan Leather being the former, is made out of 100% plants. As such, Vegan Leather is a sustainable and healthier alternative to real leather, enabling users to enjoy leather furnishings without feeling guilt about enjoyment in the expense of animals, humans and the environment. Some other pros that Vegan Leather can provide are for example, it being more affordable than real leather, more ethical, enable more variety in texture and colour, and more eco-friendly. 

Although one may argue that Vegan Leather is not leather as it is not made from animal skin, it is as close as you can get without harming an animal. It is a more comfortable choice than using genuine leather, alongside with the many pros this choice has.

How is Vegan Leather different from PU Leather then? Both don't use animal skin, so how are they different? Well, they are different in the materials to create such leather. PU uses thermoplastic polymers (a type of plastic) to create the artificial leather, and although still sustainable it is not as eco-friendly as Vegan Leather, as it is still technically a type of plastic. For people who want their their chairs to be more recyclable, 100% organic Vegan Leather would be the best choice.

All in all, Vegan Leather is a popular option for those who want to enjoy the luxurious feeling of leather without feeling the guilt and hearing the woes of your wallet.
