Chair Quality: Cost for Safety
Early morning, while scrolling through social media, I found this image of a chair.
The comments section is full of astonished remarks, many were concerned about the safety of the person who posted the picture, some were shocked to see a chair exploding for the first time.
Sadly, this is not something new.
Office chairs of all price ranges have been circulating in the market for a long time, while cheaper does not mean that it is low quality, it does bring worry if the chair is safe to use. Chair suppliers may compromise quality materials to save costs and lower prices, undermining international safety standards. And if the chair doesn't meet those criteria, this may happen.
What happened here was that the chair supplier installed a low quality gas cylinder into the chair. The pressure in it builds up overtime, and when it reach its limit the seat connected to the metal pipe would spring upwards and worse, explode, hurting the user and those near it. If you are lucky you can get away with small scratches, if you're not, then you're lucky to be alive.
The money saved in exchange for a potentially dangerous chair is not worth it.
Always check if the chair has certifications such as BIFMA or your country's furniture standard, and if the chair supplier is reliable and can provide support. Compare chairs and see which one would better guarantee a safe seating experience. Often such chair will come with other unique features that makes the seating experience more enjoyable.
Even if it means you have to pay more, do it for your own good. Better spend it on a good chair than spend it on hospital bills.
